Young Israel Statement on the Deadly Shooting in New Zealand

March 15, 2019

The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) issued the following statement today in the wake of a mass shooting in two New Zealand mosques, in which a white supremacist killed forty-nine people and injured dozens more:

“The National Council of Young Israel strongly condemns the gruesome massacre that took place in New Zealand. The horrific terrorist attack on two mosques by a hate-filled white supremacist is deplorable and difficult to process. This ghastly and sadistic assault is sadly reminiscent of the deadly shooting that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, in which worshipers who were also engaged in prayer had their lives tragically cut short by a mass murderer. Whether it is a synagogue, mosque, or church, parishioners in places of worship should be able to feel safe and secure. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Muslim community and to the families of those individuals who unfortunately lost their lives, and we offer our thoughts and prayers to all those we were injured in the gruesome attack.”
