YOUNG ISRAEL CONDEMNS RASHIDA TLAIB FOR BACKING OCASIO-CORTEZ’S “CONCENTRATION CAMP” REFERENCE
The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) today condemned Rep. Rashida Tlaib after she doubled down on her colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent remark that the United States “is running concentration camps on our southern border.”
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” program, co-anchor Martha Raddatz asked Tlaib if she agreed with Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks comparing the border facilities to concentration camps. “Absolutely,” Tlaib replied. “I mean there’s a number of experts that say this is because it’s traumatic. I mean I don’t know how to explain to people what we saw when we’re explaining to people and they’re kind of looking back and saying well that can’t be true.” With her statement, Tlaib joined Rep. Ilhan Omar in condoning Ocasio-Cortez’s troubling comments.
The NCYI noted that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum recently expressed its displeasure with Ocasio-Cortez’s disturbing remarks. In a statement released by the museum, it declared that it “unequivocally rejects efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary. That position has repeatedly and unambiguously been made clear.”
“The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has made it abundantly clear that the horrific atrocities which befell the Jews during the Holocaust should not be compared to other events under any circumstances,” said NCYI President Farley Weiss. “Rep. Tlaib’s spirited defense of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s indefensible comments minimize the brutality of the Nazi concentration camps that were used to torture the Jews during the Holocaust and demonstrate an utter lack of understanding of the unspeakable acts of barbarism that resulted in the death of so many innocent men, women and children.”
“As someone who has emphatically stated that she will vote against any U.S. military aid to Israel, opposes the existence of the state of Israel, and condemns Israel while defending Hamas, Rep. Tlaib is by no means an objective observer when it comes to matters involving the Jewish community and Jewish history,” Weiss added. “Her inability to fully comprehend the nature of the heinous and horrific concentration camps utilized by the Nazis as a means of extermination, and her willingness to use Holocaust-related terminology for political purposes, while not surprising, is nonetheless regrettable and a tremendous show of disrespect to the six-million Jews who were massacred during the Holocaust.”
For the past 107 years, the National Council of Young Israel has ably served the broader Jewish community. With more than 25,000 member families and approximately 135 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, the National Council of Young Israel is a multi-faceted organization that embraces Jewish communal needs and often takes a leading role in tackling the important issues that face the Jewish community in North America and Israel.
