Local kashrus agencies frequently grapple with issues unique to smaller towns. Let’s face it. Setting up a kosher deli in Fargo, North Dakota, has got to be more difficult than setting one up in Brooklyn, New York! As local kashrus councils emerge as an important force in various local markets, they are facing more and more challenges. These include: Setting a comfortable, inclusive community standard for kashrus; maintaining a good relationship with the local rabbinate; dealing with non-Torah observant and non-Jewish owners and workers; obstacles in kashering non-kosher banquet facilities and supermarket concessions, such as bakery and deli departments; and, sourcing issues, when kosher ingredients are not readily available. STAR-K CERTIFICATION, in an attempt to alleviate these challenges, announces a unique opportunity for local Vaadim, Rabbis and Mashgichim, the world over. STAR-K’s monthly TeleKosher Conference program will enable them to speak directly to kashrus experts from various agencies, in a non-political forum, posing their most pressing kashrus questions that are distinctive to their communities. It is just one of the agency’s many educational efforts, in addition to its research and supervision, which have put it in the forefront of kashrus promotion. This ongoing program, with moderators from various agencies, began in January with Rabbi Zushe Blech, Kehilas Beis Ben Tzion of Monsey, NY: Kasrus Administrator; Author, Kosher Food Production, on the subject of “Relating to Shomer Shabbos, Non-Frum, and Non-Jewish Proprietors. Local Vaadim, Rabbis and Mashgichim will be notified of the TeleKosher Conference program schedule via e-mail, or they may call the STAR-K office, (410) 484-4110 or email TeleKosher@Star-k.org to be put on a mailing list for updates and future dates.
