Israel Air Force destroys Iraqi nuclear reactor just before it is to become operative.

1982

Israel moves into Lebanon to defend itself from rocket attacks.

1983

Defense Minister Ariel Sharon resigns.

1984

Operation Moses brings 8,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

1985

Notorious Auschwitz doctor, Josef Mengele, is confirmed dead.

1986

Elie Wiesel wins Nobel Peace Prize. Mets win World Series!

1987

250,000 people attend rally in Washington, DC in support of immigration of Soviet Jewry.

1988

Israel launches into space the Ofeq 1 experimental satellite.

1989

Soviet Union permits Jews to emigrate on their first application for visa.

1990

Persian Gulf War. Scuds fall on Israel, miraculously low level of injuries and casualties.

1991

First Gulf War ends with Coalition leaving Sadaam Hussein in power

1992

Elections for Thirteenth Knesset; Yitzhak Rabin of the Labor party becomes prime minister

1993

The United States     Holocaust Memorial  Museum opens in  Washington, DC.

1994

Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yassir Arafat are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

1995

Yitzchak Rabin is assassinated in Tel-Aviv.

1996

Israel wins bronze medal in windsurfing competition at the Atlanta Summer Olympics.

1997

Israeli wins silver medal at European Swimming Championship.

1998

Israel celebrates its 50th anniversary.

1999

Ehud Barak is elected Prime Minister.

2000

Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman named first Jewish vice presidential candidate of a major political party.

2001

Election of Ariel Sharon as Prime Minister of Israel.

2002

In response to the continuing Palestinian Intifada as well as worldwide anti-Israel protests, over 100,000 rally to support the Jewish state in Washington D.C.

2003

 Pictures 2003 First summer Achva goes to Europe!

2004

 Pictures 2004 Windsurfer Gal Fridman wins Israel's first Olympic Gold Medal.
